Location: Belbari, Morang, Nepal
Services: Remote Court Reporting, Nepali Interpretation, and Venue Coordination
Background
A U.S. court reporting agency contacted Optima Juris to arrange a deposition involving a witness in Belbari, Morang, Nepal.
The agency initially requested an in-person court reporter and Nepali interpreter. However, neither service was readily available locally, and bringing qualified professionals into Nepal would have required international travel.
Optima Juris proposed a remote alternative that would allow the witness to participate from Nepal while the court reporter, interpreter, and other participants joined through Zoom.
The Challenge
Arranging remote reporting and interpretation addressed the staffing requirements, but the witness still needed a suitable location and equipment to participate.
Belbari presented limited options for deposition facilities and equipment. The witness needed a private, quiet location within traveling distance, along with a laptop to access the proceeding.
Finding both proved difficult. We contacted multiple hotels, many of which communicated primarily through WhatsApp. Neither the hotels nor local vendors could provide a laptop.
The Approach
Following discussions between the agency and its client, the remote arrangement was approved. We secured a remote court reporter and a Nepali interpreter for the deposition.
We then searched for a suitable venue near the witness. After contacting multiple hotels, we located a property approximately 45 minutes away.
Instead of reserving a conference room for a single participant, we booked a private hotel guest room. This provided a quiet space for the witness without requiring a larger meeting facility.
The remaining issue was the laptop. After we explained the limitations of sourcing equipment locally, the attorney agreed to provide one for the witness.
The Outcome
The witness initially needed assistance signing in to Zoom. Once connected, the deposition proceeded smoothly.
The remote arrangement allowed the court reporter and interpreter to participate without traveling to Nepal, avoiding the associated international travel expenses for the law firm.
Following the Nepal deposition, the agency continued working with Optima Juris on international assignments in India, Zimbabwe, Turkey, and Kenya, including both completed and upcoming depositions.
Coordinating a Deposition Overseas?
International depositions can require arrangements beyond securing a court reporter and interpreter. Witness location, local facilities, and access to suitable technology may also determine how the proceeding can be conducted.
